Parents & Family Support

Eating disorders rarely affect only one person. Support is available for the people around the person who is unwell, too.

What parents often carry

Parents and caregivers frequently arrive exhausted, frightened, and holding a great deal of conflicting advice. Many have been told, directly or by implication, that they caused this. That is not the position this practice starts from.

What parents do have is influence — over structure, over the tone of conversations at home, over how care is coordinated. Support here is aimed at using that influence well, rather than at assigning responsibility for how things got here.

What is available

Two distinct kinds of support.

Parent-only consultation — a session for caregivers, with or without their child in treatment. 50 minutes, $225.

Family involvement in treatment — where a young person is in therapy, family participation is decided clinically and approached with clear expectations about confidentiality, consent, communication, and each person’s role. Family sessions are 50 minutes, $265.

Common questions

Questions from parents and caregivers

Can I meet with you even if my child is not in therapy?

Yes. Parent-only consultations are available for caregivers who want guidance and support, whether or not their child is currently in treatment anywhere.

What does a parent-only consultation cover?

It depends on what you need. Common ground includes understanding what you are seeing, thinking through how to respond at home, working out what to say and what not to say, and deciding what kind of support to seek next.

Will you tell me what my child says in their sessions?

Not as a matter of course. Where a young person is in therapy with the clinician, confidentiality expectations are set explicitly with both of you at the outset — including the circumstances in which she is required to share information.

Is family therapy the same as family support?

Not quite. Family involvement in an adolescent's treatment is decided clinically, case by case. Parent-only consultation is a distinct service and is listed separately on the Fees page.

This page is general education, not individualized clinical advice. Reading it does not create a therapeutic relationship. For guidance about your own situation, speak with a qualified clinician.
