Common questions

Frequently asked questions

If something is not covered here, the 15-minute consultation is a reasonable place to ask.

Getting started

How do I get started?

Three steps. First, send a short message through the contact form, including three to five days and times that would work for a call. Second, a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to understand what you are looking for and whether the practice is an appropriate fit. Third, if it is, a 90-minute initial assessment and intake session.

What happens after the consultation?

You will receive intake documents, telehealth and financial agreements, privacy information, a Good Faith Estimate, and a request for a payment method. These are completed through the secure portal, never through this website.

Once those are complete, the next appointment is a 90-minute initial assessment and intake session. All required documents are due two days beforehand; an incomplete packet may require rescheduling.

What if the practice is not the right fit?

The clinician will say so directly and offer referral options that may be more appropriate. Availability at any referral is determined by that provider or program.

How long does therapy take?

That varies considerably and depends on your circumstances, history, and goals. A treatment plan is developed within the first three sessions and reviewed at least every three months, or sooner when clinically indicated. No one can responsibly promise a timeline at the outset.

Sessions and telehealth

Are sessions in person or online?

Sessions are held online. Care is provided to clients who are physically located where the clinician may lawfully and clinically provide services.

Zehn is telehealth-first. At the start of every session the clinician confirms your full name and your present physical location. California licensure does not authorize care when a client is physically located in another jurisdiction, and outpatient telehealth must also remain clinically appropriate for your presentation — both are reassessed each session rather than assumed.

How long is a session?

The initial assessment is 90 minutes. Ongoing individual sessions are 50 minutes, with a 75-minute extended session available when clinically indicated. Frequency is individualized rather than fixed.

Do you have a physical office?

No. Zehn is an Orange County–positioned telehealth practice and does not operate a clinical office that clients visit.

Can I join a session from anywhere?

No. You must be physically located in California. California licensure does not authorize care when a client is in another state, even temporarily, so your location is confirmed at the start of every session. Sessions cannot take place while driving, and a private setting is needed for the session to be appropriate.

Who Zehn works with

Do you work with adolescents?

Yes. Adolescent eating-disorder therapy is part of the launch scope, with parents and caregivers involved deliberately and with clear expectations about confidentiality, consent, and each person's role in treatment.

Can parents get support without their child in therapy?

Yes. Parent-only consultations are available for caregivers seeking guidance and support.

Do you treat conditions other than eating disorders?

Eating disorders are the primary specialty at launch. Co-occurring symptoms may be addressed when clinically appropriate and within the clinician's competence and outpatient scope. Active substance-use treatment is not a launch service; referral and coordination are offered instead.

Is there a minimum age?

There is no fixed minimum age. Whether outpatient telehealth is appropriate for a particular child or adolescent is a clinical judgment made during the consultation and initial assessment, taking into account developmental stage, the presentation, and the level of family involvement that would be needed.

Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes, when it is clinically appropriate. The practice works with individuals across the lifespan, and with couples and families where that fits the treatment plan. Eating disorders remain the primary specialty.

Is Zehn a crisis service?

Zehn Therapy provides scheduled outpatient psychotherapy. It does not provide crisis response, after-hours cover, medical monitoring, or 24/7 support, and messages are not monitored continuously. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a medical emergency, call 911. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by call or text at 988.

Fees, insurance, and superbills

Do you accept insurance?

Zehn is private pay at launch and is not contracted with insurance plans. Superbills are available on request for clients who wish to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is determined by your plan and is not guaranteed.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt containing the information most insurers require to consider an out-of-network reimbursement claim. You submit it to your plan yourself. Whether any amount is reimbursed is determined entirely by your plan.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

Under the federal No Surprises Act, clients who are uninsured or not using insurance are entitled to a written estimate of expected costs. Zehn provides one as part of standard onboarding. Details are on the Good Faith Estimate page.

What is the cancellation policy?

Appointments canceled within 24 hours are charged $150. A missed appointment with no notice is charged $225. Full details are on the Fees page and in the financial agreement provided during onboarding.

Working with your treatment team

Do you coordinate with other providers?

Eating-disorder treatment frequently involves more than one provider. When clinically appropriate and authorized under a signed release, the clinician coordinates with dietitians, physicians, psychiatrists, and treatment programs, and with family members where their involvement is part of the treatment plan.

Does Zehn provide medical or nutrition care?

No. Zehn provides psychotherapy. It does not provide medical monitoring, nutrition services, medication management, or IOP, PHP, or residential care. Where those are needed, the clinician coordinates with the appropriate providers when authorized.

What if I need a higher level of care?

Outpatient therapy is not appropriate for every person at every stage of an eating disorder. The clinician may recommend additional medical or nutritional support, or a higher level of care, when that is what the situation calls for. Referral options are offered without any guarantee of availability.
